Fall 2020 Shoe Guide

blank

One of the most requested posts is back: what fall shoes to buy this year! Last year, on a whim, while shopping for shoes for myself, I thought, “Damn, I wish there was a guide that could pick out the shoes I need for fall.” Then I realized that you would like this too and that I should make that guide for you! Well, if we’re being honest, so do I. So this year, I started my deep dive into this year’s trends by googling “fall 2020 shoes” and got a lot of high fashion results. Lots of “what’s on the runway” or “new styles to wear in 2020” and to be honest, none of it is helpful. But because of that scene at Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly absolutely batters Andi’s pride in front of the whole team about the trickle-down effect of couture to consumer trends, I now know that the trends set by street fashion affect trends. we buy (eventually). Therefore, I will not be ashamed to talk about designer fashion. But I also know that couture and everyday style are two very different things, so this guide is for everyday style and delves even deeper into the changing landscape of 2020. This is the most disruptive year for fashion, especially for fashion. shoes, so a lot of the trends I see are much more casual than previous fall trends. I hear a collective sigh from behind. See you fellow flats lovers and we salute you. This is your year.

I’ve edited this post from last year a bit, giving only three options per style. The first is my preferred option or choice, but given different budgets, subsequent options will have similar looks but different price points. I don’t want to overwhelm you with options, so I picked the top three at different price points that I could find!

How to buy this publication:

One note: I’m not suggesting that you need 16 new pairs of shoes this fall. Unless you’ve been in the market for 16 new pairs, that is. 😉 Instead, use this guide to help narrow down the shoe or shoes you really want or need. If you’ve been thinking about a new pair of boots, find the trend that best suits you. For example, if you are more casual and like to wear mainly tops and denim, an ankle bootie will be perfect for your wardrobe. If you’re more on trend, try a lace-up ankle boot or ridged-soled boot this fall. This is to help you find the perfect fit for you. And if you want to reference this for later in the season, be sure to pin this post so you can find it later!

I didn’t mean to “rank” the shoes in order, but I will say that this is probably my first choice for a bootie this fall. Ankle boots are a classic and have been for years and I’ll tell you why: they go with everything. Denim, dresses, leggings (no yoga, Ponte). With a top or just a t-shirt, they can make any outfit work. If you haven’t invested in a bootie yet but are looking for a great everyday boot, look no further! This is one that I would say is on the all year list, but it is definitely a good thing to have for fall. I have leaned heavily on my flats this year as they are the best option for feeling good when running errands etc. I love pointed flats, but this square toe option from Vince has been my go-to lately. If this feels like a “read the room” suggestion, I hear you. I’m not suggesting you walk around your house in heels (unless it makes you feel powerful and chic and then of course!), but in case you were looking for a pair of heels this fall, I wanted to have an option for you. . Everyone else, please go to #4.

For fall, a nice tan, neutral heel is where it’s at this year. A warm neutral can go with so many outfits and can especially warm up a denim ensemble. Think of this heel as the relaxed version of the classic black shoe. With a warmer neutral, you can pair it with any fall shade this fall. I love this heel that I’ve featured above that is almost half mule/half pump and features an acrylic strap for a bit of interest. Oh, the places I’d go in those heels. Lucky for me, my journey from the bedroom to the living room is cóheel mode and no one cares if I take them off after 11am.

I loved the idea of a pointed or flat heel for fall and winter. Especially for this fall, flat-toe sneakers can be your daily look. This style is a classic and timeless look, one that can dress up a simple jean and sweater outfit this fall. Originally popularized by Chanel, this style has been reimagined multiple times and I love this pair here; a look almost identical to the classic Chanel ballerinas.

5 / High-heeled ankle boot

I love this elegant style of booty. This look is perfect for women who love a chic all black ensemble. It’s a sexy shoe, let’s not deny it. Basically the winter equivalent of a high-heeled pump. In fact, you can combine almost the same things that you would wear with these high heeled ankle boots, they are elegant and elegant. (Without a power suit. A power suit needs heels. I don’t make the rules, okay?) If you’re more prone to wearing all black and love a dressier look, this is your swag. Pair it with all black all winter long.

I love that hiking boots have made such a fashion statement in recent years. And I’d love it even more if I lived up north, because let’s be honest, it’s not too cold down here. This hiking boot trend is very Madewell-esque, think tomboyish with a feminine twist. This style is best worn with high socks around the ankle with skinny jeans and lots of layers on top. If I were a New Yorker, this would definitely be my favorite winter shoe. Gives off that cool girl vibe I pretend to have 😉

7 / Snakeskin ankle boots

!function(d,s,id){ var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.locationn) ? ‘http’: ‘https’; if(!d.getElementById(id)) { e = d.createElement(s); e.id = id; e.src = p + ‘://widgets.rewardstyle.com/js/lookbook.js’; d.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof(window.__lookbook) === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) { window.__lookbook.init(); } }(document, ‘script’, ‘lookbook-script’);

Last year I bought my first pair of snakeskin ankle boots, which I was hesitant at first because I wanted to make sure it was something I would wear and not just a trend I would join. (Remember when my sweet two-year-old called them Dino Boots? The cutest thing in the world.) So, after owning them for the entire fall/winter season, I can say this: they are occasional booties for me but I really like having them as an option. They work best with a monochrome outfit – think all black with a hint of snakeskin. Or they work with classic pieces, like a white button-down and denim to spice up your outfit. This is why I like them not so much for fall but for the end of winter: they give new life to sweaters you’ve had on repeat for weeks. Change your boots and change your whole look.

Snakeskin ankle boots are for those looking to put a new spin on a basic shoe. If you want a touch of pattern, a little bit daring, then this bootie is for you.

8 / Slippers without laces

Yet another flat for the list, this notched flat mule is a great style for fall and a great everyday shoe. If you find your outfits lean more towards darker neutrals, a black mule would be perfect for you. I love the slippery look of a mule, not just for comfort but for convenience. The pointed toe gives this shoe a more polished look, so I would definitely suggest sticking with a pointed or square toe for the slip-on mule. You can also find some styles with the crossover chain, which is huge this year. Either way, a black mule slip is the way to go for fall.

9 / Over the knee boots

!function(d,s,id){ var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’: ‘https’; if(!d.getElementById(id)) { e = d.createElement(s); e.id = id; e.src = p + ‘://widgets.rewardstyle.com/js/lookbook.js’; d.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof(window.__lookbook) === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) { window.__lookbook.init(); } }(document, ‘script’, ‘lookbook-script’);

I’ve loved over-the-knee boots for years, but I have to admit: I never want them until I want them. Makes sense? Buying them in the early fall always seems so trite,but the first cold snap comes and it’s all I want to wear. My favorite way to pair them is with a dress, especially a mini dress, which is a great way to bring seasonal dresses into fall. But in the dead of winter, throwing them over skinny jeans as another layer of warmth is such a nice and stylish way to stay warm. The good news is that OTK boots come in all different widths, sizes, heights, and budgets! So if these three aren’t your favorites, there are a LOT of great ones out there. Start at Nordstrom first and then branch out to other retailers. I always find Nordstrom has the best selection/most sizes.

10 / Ankle boots with laces

Now this one I have 5 options because I wanted to include black leather options as well. The lace-up bootie has a few different variations: you can go military, vintage, or streetwear. So I’ve included a few different styles above.

I love this style for fall and this is another great option for an everyday swag. If you want a more modern everyday swag instead of the standard swag, this is your girl. I love these shoes paired with knee high socks with dresses or denim, it gives your outfit a really cool, almost vintage vibe. This style requires a slightly bolder step, so keep that in mind. This look is on my list this year to try again since you know I wore this style to the floor in high school! The 90’s are here baby and they’re here to stay.

I love this version of Madewell, but you can never go wrong with a classic Dr Martens 1460 Pascal boot as well.

11 / Fur Lined Ankle Boots

Ah, the Ugg boot. Look, if there was ever a year where the glorified house slipper that’s acceptable in public was championed, it’s this year. This is a shoe I have but don’t wear here much but maybe I should. Note to self: wear more Uggs on the blog. I have a pair that I bought, get this one, in 2007. AND they are STILL good. That’s amazing, isn’t it? I want a pair of short ankles because those are small and I’ve been waiting for mine to run out but…these boots last. The booty is so on-trend and so easy to wear. Personally, I love it best with leggings and an oversized sweater, but you can wear this booty any way you want. There are no rules with Uggs.

12 / Boot with serrated sole

!function(d,s,id){ var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’: ‘https’; if(!d.getElementById(id)) { e = d.createElement(s); e.id = id; e.src = p + ‘://widgets.rewardstyle.com/js/lookbook.js’; d.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof(window.__lookbook) === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) { window.__lookbook.init(); } }(document, ‘script’, ‘lookbook-script’);

This is another 90s retro style that has been updated and I’m a lot of fun. I love a chunky sole/heel on a boot because it creates visual interest and gives a bit of lift without feeling too heavy or heeled. So what is a ridged sole? Think Timberlands, that chunky rubber sole with deep grooves, and now you have a lug-soled boot in mind. I love this style; It feels like a juxtaposition between a workers boot and a women’s booty. I have these lighter suede boots and I love how easily they are layered with dresses (really!) to give that unexpected tomboy touch to a feminine dress.

If you like the Dr Martens look or lace-up boots, but want a dressier lace-up look, try a ridged-sole boot. Same atmosphere, different style.

13 / Sports Trainers

I left this option off last year’s list, but this year the shoe is making quite an appearance. Like x4. 2020 is definitely the year of the sneaker and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Let’s break them down!

If you exercise a lot or live in leggings, this is your shoe. You can wear it mostly with your leggings and sportswear, which is what I wear half the week, it seems winter is coming. A pretty black sneaker that can go from training to errands; a true team player. I suggest black because this is the easiest color to pair with workout gear, no matter the color. Black is my favorite for leisure, so without a doubt a good pair of dressy sneakers has to be black. I love a logo, but you can always go with a cleaner look too!

14 / Worn white sneakers

This look is really for fall: the distressed sneaker. Alson known as the Golden Goose slipper. I fought my love for them for years, even talking about them a bit to cover my tracks. But it’s true: I love Golden Goose sneakers. I love the worn look even though they are new. This look is adorable with everyday classics: denim, t-shirts, sweaters. But I also love this look with dresses. Mixing the girly dress with the tomboy sneakers is adorable this fall. (And spring!) These sneakers go well into spring/summer of next year, too.

Golden Goose will break the bank, so other options are the P448 sneakers and the Veja Esplars. These don’t look quite as used, but the same street style vibe is there. You can also wear beat-up white sneakers: problem solved. 😉

I’ve been seeing Converse high tops EVERYWHERE lately and I love them. It was the trend I DID NOT see coming. It’s so simple and easy, plus what’s better than putting on a pair of comfortable sneakers and looking so stylish and cool? This shoe works best with denim, skinny jeans, or a straight leg that hits right at your ankle would be best. You don’t want the jeans to cover up the tear in the shoe, you just want a bit of skin to show between the two. With denim, you can pair anything with this shoe – think sweaters, hoodies, simple t-shirts, a cool button down, etc. If you want an easy sneaker for every day, this is a great option!

16 / Chunky Shoes

Last but not least, this is one of my favorite trends: chunky sneakers. Or daddy’s shoes. You remember those, right? Think 1997 dad on vacation at Disneyland, that’s the vibe. I love this look better with straight leg denim, it really adds a vintage touch to daddy’s sneaker. My favorite from last year is the Reebok Harmon Classic, so if you like the look of chunky sneakers but aren’t sure where to start, that’s a great option! In fact, I’ve included a few options above just because this is a different look for everyone.
